At least 33 cartons of imported alcohol sackets from Uganda were burnt at Morobo County police headquarters on Tuesday.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, Morobo authorities said most people excessively drink, waste time and forget to work.

The release said youth are heavily involved in drinking because it is the cheapest alcohol and that alcohol fuels crime and also puts citizens’ health at risk.

Security personnel who declined to be named said the burning was to reduce the rate of drinking in the County and minimize crime.

The acting medical officer in the County, Juma Cirilo, said alcohol is creating difficulties for the medical personnel in the County who instead of treating the really ill people, waste time treating drunkards.

Morobo County had issued an order banning the circulation and the sale of alcohol since the June 28, 2010.
