The Churches have an important role during the last days of the elections process sensitizing the faithful to vote and pass a message of peace during and after the elections.

Edmund Yakani Berizilious is the coordinator of the Sudanese Network for Democratic Elections (SUNDE), a domestic elections observers’ umbrella of 78 civil society groups, including churches, which also conducted civic education.

Mr. Yakani told SCR News that the churches have a three-fold effective role to play in the elections: to encourage people to vote, to preach a message of peace during polling days and to urge voters to welcome the final results without violence.

Mr. Yakani added that the Churches should organize prayers for the success of the elections and pass messages of peace and respect.

He added that the Churches have to help the faithful to link elections with the referendum.

Mr. Yakani explained that the national assembly being constituted from the elections results will have an impact in the referendum.

Mr. Yakani asked the churches to watch over the process of nomination of new ministers.

He added the churches should see if those appointed for ministerial positions are committed people and good leaders.
