The Commissioner of Wulu County in Lakes State has urged the entire population of South Sudan to double efforts in agricultural production instead of depending on imports.
Ezekiel Thiang Mangar told Good News Radio on Thursday shortly after closing the Lakes State Agricultural Trade Fair at Akon Buoi Cultural Centre in Rumbek that agriculture is the backbone of the new nation.He urged farmers to double food production to reduce imports.
Commissioner Thiang decried inadequate rainfall, lack of modern tools and human power as the main challenges affecting farmers in Lakes State.
He said only two farmers had tractors and people were not able to cultivate big areas.
State Agriculture Ministry Director David Bol Machok said only Rumbek East, Rumbek Central and Wulu counties mobilized their farmers to take part in the fair.
He explained that the other five counties had problems with transport.
Mr Bol said farmers will be selected to represent Lakes State in Juba Agriculture Show at the end of the month.
