US special envoy for Sudan IS HOLDONG talks in Khartoum with opposition leaders in a bid to rescue the elections due in nine days.
Gen. Scott Gration, who arrived yesterday in Khartoum, met separately with Umma party, Hassan al-Turabi and Democratic Unionist Party head Mohammed Osman al-Mirghani, AFP reported.Mr. Gration, who made no public statements, was expected to hold negotiations on the elections and on the fate Darfur.
The rescue mission comes a day after SPLM presidential candidate Yasser Arman pulled out of the race for fear of fraud.
The United States, Britain and Norway on Wednesday expressed concern over the elections urging all parties to work urgently to ensure that elections can proceed peacefully and credibly in April.
