Cuts in salaries implemented by some states are against the policy set by the national Government and have nothing to do with the austerity measures.

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning issued on Wednesday a clarification about reductions in housing and job specific allowances.

The document says any State authority that cuts the salaries of its workers is not implementing the policy of the National Government and it has nothing to do with the austerity measures undertaken by the National Finance Ministry.

The note recognizes that States have competence to determine their salary and staffing levels.

The Ministry added that block grants to the states were reduced by 25 percent – less than the reduction in the national budget √ɬê and the states are entitled to use that money in the way they intend.
