The Governor of Central Equatoria has ordered the resumption of state revenue collection in defiance of an agreement signed with the national government to centralize taxes collection.
Clement Wani Konga issued the order Tuesday morning and declared that revenue collection starts on November 1, Bakhita Radio reported.
Governor Konga said Central Equatoria is getting half of the 11 to 12 million Pounds the state collected every month before the centralization of revenue collection was put in place.
He said Central Equatoria was walking out of the centralized system of revenue collection and state officials were on their way to Nesitu and Kaya border points to resume collecting taxes to the state.
Governor Konga said he was acting within the Constitution that sets specified jurisdictions for the state and for the national governments.
He asked why the national Government keeps three quarters of the money collected from taxes and shares the other quarter with the states.
He added that if each state were to collect its revenue the amount of taxes could be bigger.
The Governor concluded that his decision came after the national ministry of finance violated the centralization agreement.
Central Equatoria has been complaining of huge deficits after the centralization of revenue collection was put in place.
Governor Konga made the announcement during the reopening of the renovated State Secretariat building.
