Aid workers have made significant efforts to reconstruct and maintain water facilities in Abyei following the conflict, which broke out in the area in May 2011.

The Abyei town alone has four functioning clean water facilities alongside 11 hand pumps to serve 25,500 people, UNOCHA said.

However, people still have to walk long distances to access the water due to a lack of water networks.

South of Kiir River, seven of eight water yards are functioning along with an estimated 120 hand pumps to serve 100,000 people.

The area currently hosts the the people displaced from Abyei.

North of River Kiir, ten of 11 water yards and over 80 hand pumps are functioning, providing enough water for 90,000 people.

The locations are sparsely populated, but the need for safe drinking water and water for livestock will increase during the annual migration of Sudanese pastoralists through the area expected to start towards the end of October.
