Western Equatoria State Prison Police graduated the first batch of 26 Prison Emergence Response Unit officers in Yambio on Friday.
The National Director for Prisons, Colonel Juma Athieu Bol, told Anisa Radio that the Prison Emergence Response Unit controls riots or any other disruption by inmates.He said the force was well equipped to maintain security in the state prison.
Col Bol added that the first batch of Emergence Response Unit officers will be based at Yambio Central Prison.
The coming graduates will be dispersed to the ten counties of Western Equatoria State.
Col Bol mentioned that the unit faces some challenges, including means of transport and a piece of land for the force’s headquarters near the prison.
State Director for Prisons Major General Ramadan Bullen Laku plus other high rank prison officials and UNMISS representatives witnessed the graduation ceremony.
