The National Elections Commission (NEC) is the only authority legally empowered to deal with international monitors, a high ranking official said.
GoSS caretaker minister for Presidential Affairs, Luka Biong, told Bakhita Radio that the elections are regulated by law and only the NEC can oversee the process.Dr. Biong was commenting the threat of the president of the republic who said he would expel international observers if they interfered in the elections process.
The caretaker minister added that the CPA allows for international observers and the government committed itself to respect the law.
Dr. Biong said that more than half of the money for the elections comes from the international community.
He added that the international observers do not control the elections but monitor it and pass their observation to the NEC.
Dr. Biong said the opposition is expressing concern about NEC’s performance and its independence.
Dr. Biong urged citizens to protect the elections.
