The National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Saturday launched a civic education programme in Eastern Equatorial to teach citizens how to cast their votes during polling days.

Eastern Equatoria State High Election Committee Chairperson, Joseph Ojukwu, explained the key messages for the day.

Mr. Ojukwu said that the exercise was meant to create awareness after the commission realized high rate of illiteracy among the community on the voting process, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He observed that the presence of the various communities was to create sense of togetherness and advised the people to avoid violence.

Mr. Ojukwu urged voters to turn up on the polling days to choose their own leaders.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Fredric Iwi, the leader of civic education and personal affairs in the Eastern Equatorial state, said that community based civic educators are already on the ground to continue sensitizing people in the rural areas.

Hundreds of Eastern Equatorians from the eight counties turned up for the voter awareness launch with representatives from political parties and independent candidates.
