An outbreak of malaria is affecting residents in Nuba Mountains and children are the group most affected by the infection.

A local hospital has admitted more than 100 children suffering from malaria.

The nurse in charge of the Children Ward, Rocio Aguinyaga , said although the ward had 43 beds, there were 101 children admitted from complications with malaria, including diarrhoea, chest infections and malnutrition.

Nurse Aguinyaga said heavy rains and lack of food are the main causes for the malaria outbreak.

She added that malaria will be around until the end of December.

Nurse Aguinyaga said this year’s famine made people √ɬê and especially children √ɬê more vulnerable to malaria.

In July, 80 per cent of the children admitted in the ward were malaria-related cases.
