UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, is concerned about the welfare of Sudanese refugees in the four camps in Maban County, Upper Nile State, that were hard hit by heavy rains over the past days.

UNHCR said in a statement that it was working with local authorities and other UN agencies to control flooding damage and to put in place emergency response measures.

Mireille Girard, who represents the refugees’ agency for South Sudan, said the top priority was to make sure that refugees did not suffer because of extreme weather, which was already affecting the local population in certain areas of Bunj town.

She added that UNHCR wais watching the situation closely.

The agency said it hopesd to be able to continue providing services and relief items as normal to the 108,000 refugees in Maban County.
