Kapoeta Catholic Hospital, Eastern Equatoria, on Wednesday joined the global celebrations of World Tuberculosis Day.
The TB celebration under the slogan “On the move against TB” was the first of its kind organized by the Catholic Diocese of Torit Health Department, Radio Emmanuel reported.Catholic Diocese of Torit Hospital TB and HIV/AIDS project Manager, Moses Akera, said TB is more prevalent among communities of Kapoeta North, Kapoeta South and Kapoeta East Counties.
Mr. Akera said that TB cases are common in the three counties because the settlements communities in the area are very close to each other.
He said 165 patients were tested and treated in 2009-10 at Kapoeta South County and Ikotos County where the Diocese has TB units.
Ten TB related deaths were registered in the same counties.
Mt. Akera added that the celebration was aimed at raising awareness and educating local communities on the dangers of the disease and mobilize them to join the world in the fight against scourge.
World Health Organization has set the year 2015 as a global target to eradicate TB in the World.
