A good harvest and some investment by the government have reduced the annual rate of inflation in South Sudan.

Director of Economic Statistics in the National Bureau of Statistics, David Chan Thiang, told CRN that the government spent 25 million US dollars on food reserves pushing traders to sell their goods at lower prices.

He said an increase in food production, including a variety of vegetables, and good crops are another reason for the drop in prices.

Mr Chan explained that prices in Malakal are up Ð contrasting the national tendency Ð because most goods are going from Juba or Ethiopia by small barge since the rains have spoiled roads and the goods are not enough for the local needs.

Annual inflation dropped in July to 57 percent. In June it was 73 percent in May touched 85 percent.
