A member of parliament representing Kajo Keji said today in the National Legislative Assembly that she was unhappy that South Sudan’s chief negotiator for post independence talks could not come to the parliament due to health issues.
MPs asked Pagan Amum to address them about the agreements signed between Juba and Khartoum and to hear their observations concerning the deals.Mary Kiden Kimbo told CRN that MPs were informed that Mr Amum’s intervention was cancelled because he was unwell and went to Nairobi for treatment.
She said she suggested that another member of the delegation should come to speak but Deputy Speaker Daniel Awet overruled her suggestion and called her to his office.
Ms Kiden said tomorrow is the last day before MPs go for a 45-day recess.
She added that the negotiating team will ratify the agreements with Khartoum without the parliament’s green light.
Ms Kiden said the parliament was going to discuss the issues concerning sovereignty of the people of South Sudan.
She questioned some clauses in the deal about what is called trans-boundary populations and issues of citizenship.
Ms Kiden said South Sudan is not the first country to break away: India and Pakistan went through the same problem but they did not compromise on issues of distinctiveness and sovereignty.
