The UN Federation of Staff Union in Western Bahr El Ghazal state today joined a national peaceful demonstration demanding payments in dollars.
South Sudanese working for UN agencies in Wau this morning met at the UNMISS compound chanting slogans threatening to lay down their tools if their request to be paid in dollars is not met to within 48 hours, Voice of Hope reported. The demonstration came as a result of a letter addressed to UN representative Lise Grande on June 25, 2012 requesting that the national staff should be paid in dollars like the foreigners.
Western Bahr El Ghazal Union representative Michael Giba Tan said the union also called for the termination of contracts of foreigners in positions that can be staffed by nationals and the review of UNMISS payment scale.
The peaceful demonstrators called upon the management of all UN agencies and UNMISS to immediately suspend all payrolls processing until the UN headquarters in New York give a reply to their requests.
