Rumbek Police arrested a woman at Acolthen roadblock, fleeing with a baby, kidnapped from her sleeping mother during the night.

Amuwong Matuong is the mother of Laat, the kidnapped child. She told Good News Radio that she was sleeping outside her hut with seven children. Her one and half month old baby was right beside her. When she turned to breastfeed Laat, she was missing.

The incident that took place at Malual Akan, in the outskirts of Rumbek, was immediately reported to the police at the roadblocks, while the search went on in the villages around the town.

At daybreak, the police at Acolthen roadblock, three kilometres west of Rumbek, spotted a pregnant woman, pretending to be breastfeeding while waiting for a public bus.

They arrested her and took her to the police station in Rumbek.

Abuk Garang Wol denied she kidnapped the child.

She explained that an unknown woman gave her the child at the roadblock, saying she was going to buy the bus fare.

Family members urged the authorities to investigate the suspect, expressing fear that the rescued child was destined for human sacrifice.

The police officer recording the incident described it as criminal act.

He added that parents have the right to press charges against the woman who tried to kidnap the baby.
