Security agencies have formed a team to investigate the death of Kenyan medical doctor in Torit at the hands of security personnel.

The Kenyan doctor identified as George Muya was running a medical clinic in Torit town until his arrest by security personnel on Friday evening.

In a yet unclear situation, the doctor was taken to Torit Civil Hospital in coma and died on Saturday on the way to Juba for treatment.

Eastern Equatoria Minister of Public Administration and Internal Affairs, Suleiman Liling, heads the team established to investigation the death of Dr Muya while in police custody.

He said the investigation team includes members of military intelligence and Criminal Investigation Department.

MPs asked the minister to explain the situation that led to the Kenyan doctor’s arrest and eventual death.

Minister Liling said the doctor was arrested following a warrant issued three months ago by Torit County legal counsel to search for expired drugs in shops, clinics and pharmacies in the town.

He said the investigations committee should find out why National Security officers were in charge of arresting suspects.

Minister Liling explained that Dr Muya’s arrest happened when state officials were engaged with visitors from Juba.

When they heard of the arrest, Dr Muya was already lying unconscious in the hospital.

Minister Liling said deputy governor Jerome Surur Gama organized the transport of the victim to Juba but unfortunately he died on the way.

He said Dr Muya’s death was unfortunate and the cause should be made clear after the investigation.
