South Sudan needs to lay down some rules to govern revenues and avoid spending oil money in ways that do’nt benefit the whole country.
South Sudan International Growth Centre Resident Director, Peter Biar Ajak, told CRN that during the interim period South Sudan only focused on oil and ignored all other sectors.Mr Biar said after the oil deal with Sudan, South Sudan needs rules that govern oil revenue so that the country does not repeat the mistakes during the interim period that saw an overgrowth of the public employment sector that uses half of the budget.
He added that South Sudan needs to look at countries that had success stories with oil revenue to achieve national growth.
Mr Biar explained that the workshop was a discussion about the opportunities from the current economic crisis in South Sudan to find the way forward for development.
Mr Biar made these statement on Wednesday in one-day a workshop organized by the International Growth Centre under the theme “South Sudan: Crisis or opportunities” in Juba.
The workshop drew a number of officials from the international and local non-governmental organizations.
