An expert on journalism who spent three weeks in Juba training reporters and editors on elections coverage said journalists in south Sudan are too weak.

Magaret Jjuuko is the Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication in the National University of Rwanda. She told SCR News that journalists in the region lack basic skills of journalism like writing and collecting information.

Ms. Jjuuko added that however journalists possess the learning attitude to acquire new skills.

Ms. Juuko noted that for journalism to develop in the region, people in power must appreciate the role of the media as a means of development.

Ms. Juuko called on the media fraternity to study how systems operate in south Sudan in order for them to report effectively.

She also called for training of officials in the public sector to understand how the media contributes towards the development of society.
