The Southern Sudan High Elections Committee has set up a mechanism to ensure that there is gender balance in the allocation of media air time to all contesting candidates.

The move comes after a report revealed that male candidates were getting 90 percent of airtime while female candidates, who represent over 25 percent of hopefuls, got only 10 percent.

Talking to SCR news, Jersa Kide Barsaba, a member of Southern Sudan High Elections Committee and the gender focal point, said there was no mechanism in the beginning which created the big difference in the airtime allocated.

Ms. Kide called upon women to turn up at the media houses and seek for airtime to present their manifestos.
