The Red Cross society in Western Bahr El-Ghazal state celebrated on Tuesday its first anniversary in South Sudan as a humanitarian organization under the theme “Youths with the International Movement of Red Cross/Red Crescent”.

John Ambrose, Director for Primary Health Centres in WBG state Ministry of Health, said Red Cross has made tremendous efforts in the State to support Health Centres and offices, through the provision of drugs and volunteers.

He revealed that the State is challenged by two major diseases like anthrax and measles and that measles has an increased number of cases.

Leon Arkangelo Leoni, SSRC Wau Branch Manager urged the youth to join the movement in order to cover the lack of paramedics and non-medical personnel in the State.

Mr. Leoni said the SSRC work is undermined by the communities’ misperceptions regarding health issues.

He said one of the major challenges is the fact that the organization entirely depends on international funding.

Representatives of International Committee of the Red Cross/Red Crescent, Mr. John Taban Kowa, President of South Sudan Red Cross, and representatives from the State Ministry of Health attended the ceremony.
