Eastern Equatoria State has paid tribute to the people of the state who lost their lives as during the liberation struggle for the independence of South Sudan

Governor Louis Lobong Lojore said in his speech in that the Torit uprising of 1955 by Equatoria Corps and the subsequent Anyanya One rebellion sparked and inspired people of South Sudan for interdependence struggle.

He said the people of the state also helped the SPLA in fighting the war for more than 20 years with bloody sacrifices of lives making the achievement of independence possible.

Governor Lobong also urged the people to remember all South Sudanese who were tortured and some lost their lives for freedom and independence of the country.

He accused Sudan of using oil proceeds for buying chemical weapons in order to create unity by force.

The Speaker of Eastern Equatoria State Legislative Assembly, Ambrose Emmanuel Ocholimoi appreciated the 65 years that South Sudanese persevered in search for freedom.

He called upon the citizens to reflect on the Republic of South Sudan like a child of one year who faces several challenges.

Hon Ocholimoi said South Sudan has lost many relatives and friends in series of political, religious and military battles among others.

Thousands of people including representatives from the neighbouring countries of Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia turned up for the celebration of the first anniversary of South Sudan Independence at Freedom Square in Torit on Monday.
