The collection of customs revenue has increased 1,100 percent in the past six months and the authorities say it can grow even more.
The revelation was made by Fredrick Lokule Loku, Director General of South Sudan Customs Services, in a speech to the Customs Cooperation Council in Brussels, Belgium, that concluded Saturday.Mr Lokule said there is great optimism within the Customs Service and the country as a whole that non-oil revenues will continue to grow substantially with the modernization of customs services.
He added that South Sudan is negotiating with the Ugandan Revenue Authority a bi-lateral memorandum of understanding to increase cross border assistance and co-operation to strengthen the links between the customs service in both countries.
Mr Lokule asked the World Customs Organization (WCO) to assist South Sudan with the capacity building of staff and internal institutions.
He announced that during July South Sudan will apply to join WCO.
