One person died on the spot and 13 were seriously injured in Wulu County on Tuesday evening after a national security vehicle veered off the road along the Rumbek-Wulu highway.

Wulu County Commissioner Ezekiel Thiong Mangar said on Wednesday that the vehicle was travelling to Rumbek, Good News Radio reported.

Mr Thiong came to Lakes State Hospital in Rumbek to console the casualties.

He told journalists that the driver, a soldier from Wulu, was still at large.

Mr Thiong said the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established.

One of the survivors Ð who did not want to be named Ð said each passenger in the vehicle paid 15 Pounds from Wulu to Rumbek.

He added that the driver was allegedly asked to pick passengers on the way to raise some money for refuelling the vehicle.

The officer in charge of the Surgical Ward at Rumbek State Hospital, Jimmy Donato, said the 13 injured passengers were in stable condition.

He explained that some suffered head injuries, other various fractures.

Dr Donato said the ward was too small to admit all casualties and some were sleeping in the floor.

Sources say the National Security vehicle was carrying about 17 passengers, including security officials and the Wulu Payam Administrator.
