The Human Right Division at UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, has today released a report titled “Incidents of Inter-communal Violence in Jonglei State” and met with MPs from affected communities.
Richard Bennet, Director of Human Rights Division at UNMISS, told journalists he met with the MPs representing Jonglei at the National Assembly. He explained the report looked into the incidents that took place between December last year and January to February this year.
The UNMISS official said the report is a human rights investigation into the incidents to establish what exactly happened.
Mr Bennet added that over 20 investigations were conducted in different areas affected by the inter-communal violence.
He said recommendations were made for a comprehensive peace plan.
Perpetrators to be brought to justice and a justice system should be established in Jonglei with mobile courts.
Mr Bennet said some recommendations are in line with what came out at the Jonglei Peace Commission Conference in May that proposes long term measures including establishment of a justice system in the state.
