Students at Juba University have condemned the dissolution of their union decreed by the vice chancellor and said they will not evacuate hostels.
On Thursday, Vice Chancellor Aggrey Abate closed Juba University Students Union (JUSU) and said the University will reopen after students vacated all hostels.Bakhita Radio visited the students this morning in a hostel to find out their views on the dissolution of the union.
James Makech said the students condemned Professor Abate’s decision to dissolve the union and the call on students to evacuate the hostel.
He explained that neither the union nor accommodation were the reasons for the fight that broke out in the university in March between two individuals.
Mr Makech said students are supporting JUSU’s intension to open a court case against the administration of the university.
Marko Manyang said the dissolution of the union brings academic instability in the university.
He said the union is a body that deals with students’ grievances.
Mr Manyang explained that the administration should not use the excuse of the hostels to delay the reopening of the university.
He said the hostels issue was not connected with the university’s closure.
Mr Manyang added that the administration is not willing to open the university, just to stay at home and receive salaries.
He accused the university administration of not caring for the future of South Sudan.
Mr Manyang said the students are not going to take the law into their hands.
He appealed to the Government to reverse the decisions takes by the administration of the University of Juba to close the students’ union and the various hostels for male and female students.
