A new college for nurses and midwives opened Friday in Juba in a bid to cut high rates of maternal and infant mortality in South Sudan.
Petronella Wawa is the principle of Juba College of Nurses and Midwifery. She said during the inauguration that the college can accommodate up to 136 students and the new hostel solves the problem of boarding, Bakhita Radio reported.She added that currently the college has 93 students and they plan another intake next year.
National health minister Micheal Milli opened the college.
He said he was very happy with the students who made the good choice to join the nurse and midwifery course.
Dr Milli called on the students to give patients the full services they promised when they start their career as nurses and midwives.
He said the government will employ all nurses graduated in midwifery.
Dr Milli said he had already submitted a list of 215 midwives to the Council of Ministers for approval.
He added that he is waiting for a final resolution from the Cabinet.
