The chief immigration officer in Lakes State has warned that stringent measures will be taken against foreigners who fail to turn up and register.

Riak Zakaria Mathen told Good News Radio that foreigners in Lakes State have up to Monday to register and those who fail risk arrest and deportation.

Mr Zakaria expressed concern because only 60 foreigners had registered by Friday morning, mostly Kenyans, Indians and Somalis.

He said Ugandans and Darfuris were not registering.

Mr Zakaria added that his office met with leaders from various communities of foreigners in Lakes State before issuing an official communication about the registration exercise.

Foreigners are required to have passports and work or business permits from the Government of South Sudan in order to register.

He said those without work permits but with ID cards showing where they work could get a month-permit in order to go to Juba and get the document from the Labour ministry.

Some foreigners have voiced concerns over what they termed high registration costs. The registration costs 170 Pounds but it jumps to 300 Pounds for those with expired visas.
