The Chairperson of South Sudan Aids Commission challenged women in Lakes State to abandon the practice of abstaining from sex for a period of two years after giving birth, saying that the tradition could be contributing to the spread of HIV.
Achol Ayom Dor told some 50 participants at the workshop on HIV Aids in Rumbek that the practice heightens the risk of HIV among married couples since husbands may engage in sexual activities outside marriage, Good News Radio reportedShe said the two-year abstinence from sex after delivery is nonsense and women have the responsibility to ensure that they and their husbands are safe from Aids.
Dr Ayom advised parents to talk about sex with children as soon as they reach age of 10.
Director for Human Resource Development and Training at the Lakes State’s Health Ministry, Martin Telar Chanuong, said as the country moves from war to development there is need for more qualified people to convey messages on HIV and Aids.
Mr Chanuong advised participants to pay special attention to the workshop and ensure that what they learn is used to educate people about HIV and Aids.
The HIV Aids Leadership Response Workshop for community leaders concluded today.
