The UN secretary general has called for international support to eliminate the threat of Ugandan rebels and address the impact of their activities in Central African countries.

The call comes after the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels resumed attacks against civilians in Central Africa.

Ban Ki-moon called upon the international community to support the implementation of a coordinated regional strategy by South Sudan, DR Congo, Central African Republic and Uganda together with the African Union to address the threat and the impact of LRA activities.

He added that regional efforts need resources to ensure success.

Mr Ban said he was encouraged by the growing cooperation among stakeholders working to eliminate the threat posed by LRA.

In March, the four countries affected by the LRA’s activities launched a joint military task force to pursue the rebel fighters.

Mr Ban made these statements in his latest report on the activities of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa and developments in relation to the LRA.
