The South Sudan Aids Commission has declared a nationwide war against the infection and part of the combat is to introduce HIV Aids education into the school programmes.

Achol Ayom is the Deputy Chairperson of the South Sudan HIV/AIDS Commission. She told Good News Radio that the inclusion of Aids education in school curricula will add value to the fight against the pandemic.

She said the Commission is determined to ensure that people understand the difference between Aids and other diseases.

She added that protection is an effective weapon against HIV Aids infections.

Dr Ayom said she fears HIV infections in South Sudan may have gone up due to the country’s latest political developments.

Although the official rate of infection is 3.1 percent, she said she believes that in reality it is much higher because peace opened South Sudan’s communities up.

She added that people should not leave Aids to chance but combat the infection before it spreads out of control.

Dr Ayom said combating Aids is a war that has to involve the authorities and the communities.

A three-day HIV AIDS Leadership Response Workshop kicked off in Rumbek on Wednesday to bring together teachers, youth, religious leaders and politicians from various parts of Lakes State.
