A summit of African heads of state slated to take place in Malawi has been moved to Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

Malawian president Joyce Banda cancelled the summit scheduled to July 9 to 16 because she did not want to welcome President Omar Al Bashir in Malawi.

Ms Banda had asked the African Union not to invite Mr. Al Bashir who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide and war crimes.

The AU wrote a letter to Ms Banda insisting that Mr Al Bashir should be welcomed in Malawi despite the ICC warrant.

Malawi is party to the Rome Statute, which created the ICC, and requires member states to co-operate with the court.
