Three people suffering from mental illness have died of negligence in Rumbek Central Prison where they were held.
A local source told CRN that the deceased were among eight people with mental problems being kept in chains at the prison facility.A number of people with mental problems is kept in other prisons in Lakes State.
He said people suffering from mental illness are kept in chains without proper health and hygienic care.
Patients are medicated with the wrong medicines that instead of alleviating their suffering confuse them further.
The source said that the three deaths that took place since December were due to negligence and lack of hygiene and medicines.
South Sudan does not have psychiatric hospitals.
It is a normal practice to keep violent people suffering from mental disorders in chains in prison establishments without proper medical or humanitarian care.
