The government has put food security at the level of national physical security.

Animal Resources national minister Martin Elia Lomuro told the four-day national Livestock Coordination Conference today in Juba that it is an insult that many food and drinks are coming from Uganda.

He said South Sudanese experts in the country’s institutions are not serious and do not care about food security.

Dr Elia called on the people of South Sudan to take farming seriously to ensure the country produces the food it needs.

He said South Sudan is facing a food gap because people do not innovate.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Animal Resources said the objective of the conference was to discuss the national policy framework and strategic plans of the Ministry for 2012-2016.

He said the conference provides a forum for participatory planning, coordination and harmonization of livestock and fisheries policy in the country.

The conference drew together national and state Ministers for Animal Resources, Fisheries, Agriculture and Forestry, donors and development partners.
