Students from Abyei celebrated the memory of those killed by the Sudanese army when it invaded and occupied the area on May 14, 2008, and May 21, 2011.

The celebration took place at Wau Theatre.

Arop Mouyak Mounykouc said the students organized the Abyei Martyrs celebration to honour their brothers and sisters who were killed defending the land.

He said he believed in a peaceful future for Abyei with suffering giving way to liberation.

The students’ representative added that Abyei belongs to South Sudan.

Mr Mouyak said May 21 was a painful day for all families of Abyei.

He added that those who survived cannot forget the sacrifice of those who died for the land of Abyei.

Over 100,000 people from Abyei live in displacement in South Sudan since May 21, 2011, when the Sudanese forces attacked and occupied the area for the second time.

The UN Security Council has ordered Sudan to withdraw its forces from Abyei but some 200 to 300 soldiers remain in the contested area.
