AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION CAMPAIGN STARTS IN WESTERN EQUATORIA

The national ministry of agriculture has allocated 45 tons of seeds to Western Equatoria to boost food production in the state that used to be South Sudan’s bread basket.

Director General for agriculture Marcello Constantino Bakuyo told Anisa FM that the ministry is transporting the seeds from Juba to distribute them to all the counties in the state.

The seeds include maize, sorghum, rice, beans and groundnuts.

Besides, the ministry established a five-acre seed multiplication project for maize and groundnuts in Gangura area.

The agriculture ministry is preparing more than 10,000 orange, mango, palm and avocados seedlings at Saura area to be sold to the farmers at affordable prices.

Mr Bakuyo disclosed that 46 forest guards from all the counties were trained and certified to protect the forest and reserves in the state.

He added that Norwegian People’s Aid constructed and furnished an agriculture office in Mvolo and handed it over to the county authorities last April.

Mr Bakuyo said the state minister for agriculture is launching a big production campaign throughout the state this week, visiting and talking with farmers and the relevant authorities about agriculture.
