The UN Security Council called on South Sudan and Sudan to end hostilities within two days and resume negotiations within two weeks to resolve all outstanding issues or else face “appropriate measures”.

The 15-member Council Wednesday adopted unanimously Resolution 2046 telling South Sudan and Sudan to cease all hostilities within 48 hours, withdraw all of their armed forces to their side of the border, activate the necessary border security mechanisms within one week and stop hostile statements through the media.

The UN body also told South Sudan and Sudan to resume negotiations on outstanding issues of oil, borders and Abyei within two weeks and have them finished in three months time under the AU mediation.

The Security Council threatened to take appropriate additional non-military measures if any or all of the parties do not comply with the decisions in the resolution.

National Minister for Cabinet Affairs Deng Alor told the UN Security Council that his government commits solemnly to comply with the resolution.

Sudan’s Ambassador to the UN Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman said peace will only be achieved if South Sudan stops “all forms of support and sheltering of proxy and rebel armed groups.”
