The National Ministry of Finance Thursday launched the non-oil revenue campaign aiming to boost the economy of South Sudan after the oil production shutdown earlier this year.

Deputy Minister Marial Awou told journalists that it was a historical moment to roll out the new centralized tax collection system in South Sudan that took six months to develop.

He said it was necessary for the government to increase non oil revenue at this difficult time after the oil production shutdown.

Dr Awou added that breaking away from oil dependency will make the economy more resilient, independent, and secure.

The Deputy Minister said the ministry is working to improve the tax collection system to make it fair and simple and reduce the cost of doing business in South Sudan.

He added that the campaign will take South Sudan towards a more independent economy that does not rely on oil but on successful businesses that generate sustainable revenues for government services.
