Constant attacks and cattle rustling have annoyed security authorities in Eastern Equatoria state prompting them to organize a disarmament campaign of the civil community.

State Acting Police Commissioner, Col. Ben Banal, told Radio Emmanuel that the police are due to take action to disarm the civilians because they do not heed advice to stop attacking the army and innocent citizens.

Col. Banal appeals to civilians in possession of firearms to surrender them to the police voluntarily, saying the exercise is meant to bring peace to the state during the electoral process.

The Police Commissioner said disarming the civilians has been overdue and delayed to effect.

Col. Banal added that the recent spate of security threats caused by the misuse of illegal firearms in the region has prompted the government to take action against illegally armed civilians.
