An educationist working in Rumbek says education is worsening in Lakes Sate due to a shortage of qualified teachers.

Nechamia Ater Toric, who began his teaching career in 1956, told Good News Radio that most teachers in Lakes state are not qualified.

He said the appointment and promotion of teachers should be done based on merit by the Ministry of Public Service.

The educator added that school children need special attention from qualified teachers who have the capacity to stay with and teach them.

Mr Ater noted that many teachers abandoned the career for better paid jobs and some parents in Lakes State are seeking quality education for their children in neighbouring countries.

He said the education sector in Lakes state needs planning and teachers’ salaries should be revised to match their qualifications.

Some schools in Lakes State have been forced to hire part of their teaching staff from East Africa due to lack of qualified teachers.
