The mayor of Tonj town in Warrap State has banned the use of plastic bags responsible for the death of livestock, including goats and sheep.

Mayor Joseph Anei Madoor said the use of plastic bags contributes to environmental degradation and affects land cultivation.

He asked traders to use newspapers, buckets and baskets to sell their goods to the public.

Mr Anei said he is establishing a committee to follow the eradication of plastic bags in the shops.

Those found breaking the ban will be fined by the City Council.

Mr Anei said the City Council will distribute dust bins to decompose the rubbish.

He asked people to burn all plastic bags to avoid random killing of animals and soil degradation.
