The students of the University of Juba have condemned the decision taken by the administration to shut down the institution until further notice.

Simon Machuor heads the Seven States Committee to resolve the issues between the students. He told CRN that the students condemned the decision to close down the university.

He said if the national government should take a stand otherwise the students are not going to leave the campus.

Mr Machuor warned that the university should be reopened within 24 hours or else students will unite regardless of their difference and take the necessary action within the campus.

Michael Gwe Lia, chairperson of Juba University Students’ Union Council, said the decision taken by the administration to close the university was wrong because it will fuel chaos.

He said there was no reason to close the university because nobody died in the incidents, only some students were injured.

He added that the union was sorry and apologized for what has happened to the injured students.

Mr Gwe accused the university’s administration of bad faith. He said they were forced to open the university and now they closed it as soon as they had some reason.

He said students should not be forced to leave the campus because many come from Upper Nile and Bahr El Ghazal and they have no place to go nor money to return home.

The students’ leader urged the administration to continue providing water, food, and electricity to the hostels.

Mr Gwe said the union is asking the government not to back the administration’s decision to shut down the University of Juba.
