The Yei River County Assistant Commissioner of Forestry has appealed to the local chiefs to cooperate with the county’s authorities to protect trees that are illegally being cut down by intruders.

Kennedy Alfred said the chiefs are the immediate people in some of the forest reserve areas who can give clear information about activities in those forests.

He added that the chiefs can also help control the illegal entry of people into the forests.

Mr Kennedy explained that 30 forest guards covering the six counties of Central Equatoria have been trained for a month at Korgulu Forestry Training Centre and are ready for deployment.

He added that the guards are waiting for their uniforms and weapons to start work.

Mr Kennedy cited out Kejiko forest Reserve in Yei River County has been badly destroyed by intruders.

He appealed to the population to get permission from the county authorities before cutting down trees.
