A journalist working for an independent newspaper was detained for six hours and released without charges after he published a story on Juba’s ever-growing rubbish piles.

Otieno Ogeda, news editor for The Advertiser, told Bakhita Radio that he received a phone call from the Airport security authorities asking him to report to their office.

He said he was asked why he attached a photo of rubbish lying on a road near the airport.

Mr. Ogeda explained that his story was to alert the public to the danger of mountains of garbage in the city since the Juba Mayor admitted he did not have money to pay to the cleaning companies.

He said the CID department confiscated his Identity Card and asked him to leave the office.

Mr Ogeda confirmed that he was not beaten but only asked to sit on the floor for investigation.

He also said he was humiliated and received some verbal abuse by a CID interrogator.
