Torit County prisons officials blamed a recent break out of prisoners on increasing rates of food scarcity at the institution and it is worrying officers.

An inmate escaped from Torit prison cell last week, prompting the guard on duty to commit suicide.

Prisons Director at Torit County, Col. Brown Lubong Wuak, linked the escape to scarcity of food for inmates at the facility, Radio Emmanuel reported.

Mr. Lubong revealed that another suspect also attempted to flee into freedom few days after the fateful incidence, but he was recaptured around Hai Mission, in Torit.

Col. Lubong expressed fears that the lack of food, coupled with poor security at the prisons, might force a large number of inmates, some with criminal records, to break loose and unravel their anger on the community.

Torit County Prisons Director appealed for an urgent response from the state government authority to address the situation before it bursts out of control.

Col. Lubong said prisoners survive on scanty slices of bread for the last two months following the abrupt termination of food provision by a contractor.

The food supplier is reportedly claiming the Government has not paid him for the e last two years and will resume food supplying after getting his money.

Col. Lubong also cited congestion of inmates as another factor that could prompt a massive escape.
