Some 12,000 troops from South Sudan Armed Forces were deployed to Jonglei State to disarm civilians in the most violent and volatile region of the country.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit announced last week a comprehensive disarmament operation in Jonglei to bring peace and security to the state marked by constant inter-ethnic fighting.

Civilians were urged to give up their weapons freely to the local authorities otherwise the military will disarm them by force.

The disarmament exercise in Jonglei state targets to recover some 30,000 illegal guns in the hands of civilians used to fuel inter-tribal feuds that claimed the lives of thousands in the last six years.
