DDR REACHES OUT TO WOMEN ASSOCIATED WITH ARMED FORCES

Southern Sudan Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Commission has conducted a one-day workshop with the aim of reaching out to women who supported the armed forces during the years of armed struggle.

Women Associated with Armed Forces (WAAF) was formed by women who helped the armed forces taking care of combatants by providing food and nursing the wounded among other activities.

However, most women were left with no skills or assistance to sustain them after the war since they did not quality as veterans of war.

Anne Kiima, DDR deputy chairperson, told the press that the commission is focusing on these women because most of then fell out of the ex-combatants list and ended up without any training.

She added that WAAF members will be reached out through community based organizations.

Ms. Kiima added that WAAF members will go through social re-integration where they will choose and what they want to do.

Rose Nyoka, a member of WAAF from Lainya, said from the time of peace the women who supported the armed forces have been neglected and it has created a big impact on their families.

Ms. Nyoka called on GoSS to ensure the WAAF associates are reached to like any other ex combatants.
