The UN Food and Agriculture Organization yesterday opened the first seed fair of this year in Morobo County with funds from the French government.
The seed fair aim at transforming agriculture in the country through boosting the capacity of local farmers and vulnerable groups by providing them with quality seeds.
The Director of the Equatoria Farmers Extension Advisory Association, Clement Metaloro, was contracted by FAO to oversee and monitor the growing of the seeds.
He said Morobo seed fair gathered more than two hundred sacks of groundnuts, beans, maize, sorghum and cassava.
Mr Metaloro congratulated FAO for efforts towards improving the skills of local farmers in Morobo.

According to FAO, the seed fair targets farmers with fewer resources, like returnees, elderly, widows, and farmers who lost their crops to poor weather conditions.
FAO’s Deputy Emergency Coordinator, Michael Oyet, said that seeds are basic for any farmer to survive. He explained that the seed fair was to ensure each farmer has access to quality seeds.

The Morobo seed fair targeted 600 households. Each farmer was given a voucher with a cash value of 45 Pounds that can be exchanged for seed at the fair. The vendors will then receive cash in return for the vouchers.
The seed fairs began in Morobo and will roll out in Western Bahr-el-Ghazal, Eastern and Western Equatoria by the end of this month.
