St. Josephine Bakhita is a special example of forgiveness that should be followed by all South Sudanese.

The Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, Fernando Colombo, said yesterday at Holy Family Cathedral during the mass in honour of St Josephine Bakhita that she forgave her captors and thanked God for using their evil practice to lead her to the Christian faith.

Fr. Colombo said that St. Bakhita gave a lesson of total forgiveness following Jesus on the Cross who forgave those who were killing him.

Rose Nyidier, a faithful at the celebration, told Good News Radio that she prayed that St. Josephine Bakhita inspired girls in South Sudan to become sisters.

She encouraged believers to copy St. Bakhita’s deep faith and tenacity despite the many challenges she had in her life.

St. Josephine Bakhita was a native from Darfur. She was captured and sold out as a slave. She later became a Catholic nun in Italy and died at the age of about 78.

She became a saint in 2000.
